Even though it is still 2011, there are quite a few MMO games currently under development that are being avidly watched by fans. Here is a list of some of the upcoming MMORPGs that gamers expect to be among the top MMOs next year in 2012.
Please note: since this website is all about unreleased games that are still under development, much of what is written here is speculation and opinion. It is also impossible for the writers to be one hundred percent accurate since conflicting news stories sometimes appear. What we have here are some reports by fans, information from press releases and a lot of wild mass guessing. Enjoy!
1.) Star Wars: The Old Republic
Let’s not beat around the bush but instead tackle the subject head-on. One of the top upcoming MMORPGs is Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) which will be released by BioWare and LucasArts. This title has at least two great things going for it – top developer Bioware and the behemoth Star Wars franchise.
Bioware, of course, is the maker of many bestselling games like Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Jade Empire, Mass Effect and Dragon Age: Origins. It also developed the critically-acclaimed and fan-favorite game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR). SWTOR is set roughly 100 years after the events of KOTOR.
The Star Wars franchise, on the other hand, is a mammoth machine that has disgorged both big hits and near-misses. Nonetheless, it still has a large fan base that is very loyal to it.
SWTOR is number one on this list because when pre-orders were announced, sales reached record highs and is currently at almost half a million which means that this 2012 MMO is already a big hit.

2.) Guild Wars 2
Number two on the list is Guild Wars 2 (GW2), a sequel to the hit MMORPG Guild Wars by ArenaNet. Like it’s predecessor, GW2 will not have a monthly fee but gamers will have to buy the game which is a business model that many people prefer.
Regarding gameplay, ArenaNet has announced that most of the game content can be played solo. The social gameplay, on the other hand, will also be encouraged. Group or cooperative PvE has been designed in such a way that people who work together to defeat an enemy will each receive 100% of the XP and loot for the kill, unlike in other games where xp and loot is shared so that everyone only gets a fraction of what they would have gotten if they had solo’ed the kill.
Also, while Arenanet preferred to call GW a competitive online role-playing game (CORPG), GW2 is said to be a full-featured MMORPG.
The developers have promised an altogether different MMO experience with GW2.
It doesn’t suck your life away and force you onto a grinding treadmill; it doesn’t make you spend hours preparing to have fun rather than just having fun; and of course, it doesn’t have a monthly fee.

Coming in at third only because the project has been a big secret all this time is Blizzard’s new MMO Titan.
As the developers of the top MMORPG today, World of Warcraft (WoW), Blizzard’s moves are always closely watched by it’s legions of fans so ever since an online job listing in 2007 mentioned a new game, speculation has been quite intense.
There is almost nothing known about this Top Secret Next-Gen MMO (as described in the job listing) except that Blizzard has stated that it is not a sequel to WoW and that both games will run side-by-side. In fact, the game might not be an MMORPG at all. It could be a MMO first-person shooter (MMOFPS).
There is no official website for Titan but here is the latest news.
This is Part Two of the Top Upcoming 2012 MMORPG Games List
4.) The Secret World
Coming in at a strong number four is Funcom’s The Secret World, a promising new MMO that is one of the most anticipated releases. Funcom is a well-known developer that gave us some great games like Anarchy Online and Age of Conan.
The Secret World is set in the modern-day world, unlike most MMOs that are typically set in medieval fantasy worlds. This gives it a good novelty factor but it will still have that familiar feeling to it as players will be fighting creatures from myth and legend such as vampires, werewolves, metal golems, undead dinosaurs, etc. Part of the fun is from seeing such creatures in mundane settings like a parking lot or gas station.
One of the upcoming MMO’s most unique features is its total lack of classes and levels. This freeform character customization will allow gamers to chose whichever powers, clothes and weapons they wish without having to re-roll or create a new character. When starting out players will need to chose from three secret societies that protect mankind from the creatures of darkness. Additional powers, clothes and weapons will be unlocked by completing tasks set by the characters’ secret society.
Beta signups are live at the Secret World website
5.) World of Darkness MMO
Coming soon from Crowd Control Productions (CCP, the developers of Eve Online) and White Wolf, Inc., World of Darkness Online will be a dark, immersive MMO based on the legendary roleplaying franchise to be released Vampire: The Masquerade. To be released 2012 at the earliest, it will possibly be for adults only as it has been reported to contain mature themes such as gore and nudity. Player politics and live-action role-playing (LARP) are expected to be part of the core gameplay.
There is no official website dedicated to WoD yet but the announcement the project is at http://www.ccpgames.com/en/products/world-of-darkness
